Download OpenVPN for Android: a free, open-source client with advanced features like split tunneling, proxy, and Tor. No root required. Highly configurable.
OpenVPN for Android is a powerful, open-source VPN client that lets you connect to your own, company, university, or commercial OpenVPN server using the Android VPNService API (no root required). It offers advanced configuration options like static routing, compression, proxy support, Tor, and per-app split tunneling—ideal for tech-savvy users who want granular control. The app is ad-free and respects your privacy, but it's not a VPN service itself. Recent updates have caused connection issues for some, and the UI could be more polished. However, the developer is responsive and actively fixes bugs. Suitable for anyone needing a reliable OpenVPN client with deep customization.
Great App. Please provide a feature to export/import or backup the profiles we have created. Setting up the app on new/formatted device would become easy, especially when a lot of tweaks are applied in the config.
It works well but I did find that I had to set the DNS server manually or it keeps dropping the VPN connection. My friend had the exact same issue. Once you set that though, it works great.
It's an alright client, but at least on my device it keeps automatically reconnecting after a reboot, despite having Default VPN unset and Keep VPN Connected unchecked. Sometimes immediately after the boot, sometimes a few minutes later (I don't have many autostarting apps and they're not that demanding). Annoying!
"Rating: 3 stars for good features and benefits."
simply the best. but unable to use it with totp
after latest update, app only open to white screen then crash.
Hello and thank you for this great app! It would be much better to have an option for configuring split tunneling (per-app-proxy) setting in one place. its so irritating to have to replicate setting up split tunneling for all configs.
minimal UI is broken, you can't switch off VPN from it - instantly reconnects
OpenVPN for Android is a highly configurable, open-source VPN client praised for its advanced settings, per-app split tunneling, and flexibility compared to the official OpenVPN app. However, users frequently report that recent updates have introduced connectivity bugs, crashes, and regressions that break previously working configurations. The app also lacks convenient profile backup/export features and has some UI quirks on Android TV.
Based on real user reviews.
Yes, the app is completely free and open-source. You only need to provide your own VPN server or subscribe to a compatible VPN service.
Yes, because it's open-source and uses strong encryption. It does not log your data or require unnecessary permissions on modern Android versions.
Download the app from the store, import your .ovpn profile from storage or email, then tap to connect. Detailed guides are available in the app's FAQ.
It can help bypass censorship when connected to a server in a less restricted region. Streaming performance depends on your server speed and provider.
